Common Ground Theatre (CGT), in collaboration with SDCCD Continuing Education Division, proudly presents its production of “Nativity: A Modern Day Noel”

SAN DIEGO – Common Ground Theatre (CGT) will present its adaptation of Langston Hughes’ play, “Black Nativity” December 2 – 18, 2016, at The Educational Cultural Complex. Nativity: A Soulful Celebration” is a soul-stirring musical adapted and directed by Common Ground Theatre’s Executive Artistic Director, Charles Patmon, Jr. It uses narration, dance, spirituals, and gospel music to re-tell the story of Christmas. Gail Jhonson, award winning musician, is the musical director of “Nativity.”

This piece is part re-enactment of the birth of Jesus, part church service, and part Christmas concert, composed of gospel versions of traditional carols mixed with a few original tunes as well. Patmon’s conceptualized version is a testament to the power of gospel music and the story of the Nativity told through the combination of scripture, poetry, dance, and songs that connect today to the time of mangers and swaddling cloths. Each joyous performance brings the real meaning of faith and love to life for the entire family. “It is exciting to produce such an historical play,” Director Charles W. Patmon, Jr. said. “Because Common Ground Theatre, the oldest African American theatre arts company in San Diego and among the three oldest in the United States, celebrating 53 years of theatre excellence, we bring “Nativity” back to the stage to continue to honor the legacy of playwright Langston Hughes and CGT’s late legacy director, Dr. Floyd Gaffney.

This year, we have incorporated many of CGT’s San Diego Theatre Artist Repertory School (STARS) participants to add to the spectacle and creativity of the production.” ” CGT’s mission is to produce classics and new works by and about people of African descent that entertain, educate, and connect with audiences of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds. Its purpose is to produce high quality theatrical productions that offer a “common ground” where people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds can interact, connect and share their love of theatre. CGT envisions a culturally diverse, socially relevant, and politically aware theatre organization that nurtures the expertise of amateur and professional artists alike and improves community relations among diverse cultures and underrepresented groups.

Common Ground Theatre is supported by the San Diego Community College District Continuing Education Division, the San Diego County Community Enhancement Program, the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, and generous donations from individuals and organizations.

A portion of the proceeds from the production of “Nativity: A Modern Day Noel” will provide scholarships for students to attend Common Ground Theatre’s San Diego Theatre Artist Repertory School (STARS) program. Common Ground Theatre (CGT), in collaboration with SDCCD Continuing Education Division, proudly presents “THE WIZ”

SAN DIEGO – Common Ground Theatre (CGT) will present the soul stirring Broadway hit “THE WIZ” December 4 – 20, 2015, at The Educational Cultural Complex in San Diego. This iconic musical, with the book by William F. Brown and music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls, is adapted from the story “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum. The opening of CGT’s production will begin one day after NBC’s live television production of the Tony Award winning Broadway show on December 3.

THE WIZ tells the story of Dorothy, a troubled teen who is sent to live with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. She is miraculously whisked away from her mundane real life to an urban fantasyland called Oz. After accidentally killing the Wicked Witch of the East upon her arrival, Dorothy is told about the Wiz, a wizard who can help her get back home. As Dorothy goes in search of the Wiz, she’s joined by the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion, all searching for a piece of salvation that is within us all.

Starring as DOROTHY in CGT’s production of THE WIZ is NBC’s The Voice Alum, TIMYRA JOI. A San Diego native, Timyra (pronounced Ti-my-ra) counts it a privilege and honor to return to the stage in this production. “This is a role of a life time,” she said. ”It has always been my dream to play Dorothy, and I am fortunate to do it with Common Ground Theatre.”

“I am excited that NBC is doing a live version of this groundbreaking musical a day before our production begins,” states CGT Executive Artistic Director Charles W. Patmon, Jr. “In this 40th anniversary year of the original 1975 Broadway production, it exposes a whole new generation to the ‘colorful’ world of Oz and resurrects the show with a fresh, funky sing-along journey down the yellow brick road. Our version features local talent and a diverse cast of show-stopping performers that will come together to create an eye-popping new take unlike anything seen before.”
